The exact origin of the name Nepal is uncertain, but the most popular understanding is that it is derived from Ne (holy) and pal (cave). The word Nepal is believed to be derived from Nepa:Nepal Bhasa, the language of Newars, as the old name of Kathmandu valley was Nepa Another evidence for this is that the termNepal Bhasa language of Newars was called as Nepal Bhasa long before the unification of Nepal. The term Nepali, national language of Nepal, was given to a language called Khas Kura long after unification of Nepal.
